Das Übereinkommen konkretisiert die Menschenrechte für die Lebensbereiche des Kindes und ergänzt damit die allgemeineren Bestimmungen der beiden Menschenrechtspakte der UNO, denen die Schweiz 1992 beigetreten ist. Es leistet einen internationalen Beitrag zu einem besseren rechtlichen und tatsächlichen Schutz der schwächsten Glieder jeder Gesellschaft. Der Beitritt der Schweiz ist ein vordringliches Anliegen der schweizerischen Menschenrechtspolitik.
