Entreprise fondée en 1914 par le rachat de la Société Beznau-Löntsch, filiale de la Motor, par neuf entreprises cantonales, sous l'égide du canton d'Argovie.
Capital libéré fr. 53'600'000 (sur fr. 80'000'000)en 1939, dont la répartition est la suivante: 18.375 % Canton de Zurich, 18.375 % Elektrizitätswerke des Kantons Zürich, 14 % Canton d'Argovie, 14% Aargauisches Elektrizitätswerk (AEW), 12.5 % St. Gallisch-Apenzellische Kraftwerke, 12.25 % EW des Kantons Thurgau, 7.875 % EW des Kantons Schaffhausen, 2.625 % Cantons de Glaris et Zug.
Principales participations des NOK: Aarewerke (10%), KW Wäggital (50%), KW Ryburg-Schwörstadt (25%), Bündner KW (44.2%), Etzelwerk (45%), KW Rupperswil-Auenstein (depuis 1941, 45% NOK, 55% CFF).
