* US Legation Berne to ?, 31.8.1943 (weitergeleitet an MEW, 14.9.1943): Italiener scheinen keine Anstalten zu machen, ihre Kapitalanlagen in die Schweiz zu transferieren, nach Angaben von Genf, Zürich Basel und Bern. Der frühere starke Schmuggel von Lire sei nach der Invasion in Sizilien weggefallen und "Swiss quotations on shares in Italian companies increased considerably. Lire transactions were from 15 to 20 millions a week at the Federal Bank in Geneva in July, but early in August they had dropped to around 2 millions. In Basel they are running from 4 to 5 millions a week, with none reported by the Volksbank in Bern within the last month."
